James Kelsey Nelson

James Kelsey Nelson (he/him/his) is a playwright and director based in Chicago. His plays include Cambriolage (Live Arts: Waterworks Festival, Gallery Players: Black Box New Play Festival), Henchmen (UC Berkeley: Workshop Production, Anglo-Irish Theatre Group: Workshop Production), Kirschgarten (Southeast Texas Festival of New Plays: Semifinalist), The Waterfall Scene (Gallery Players: Black Box New Play Festival, Meanwhile Park Playwriting Prize: Finalist), and many short works which have been produced around the country and abroad. As a freelance director in the San Francisco Bay Area, James directed the regional premiere of Madhuri Shekar’s In Love and Warcraft at Custom Made Theatre Company, which received the Bay Area Critics Circle awards for Overall Production, Direction, and Ensemble. Other directing credits include A Month in the Country and Chapter Two at Ross Valley Players, Farragut North and Dead Man’s Cell Phone at Masquers Playhouse, the world premiere of The Ice Cream Sandwich Incident at FaultLine Theater, Becky’s New Car at Dragon Productions, Inspecting Carol at Novato Theater Company and others. James was formerly the Artistic Director of the Anglo-Irish Theatre Group in Tübingen, Germany, where he directed productions of Translations, Equus, The Pillowman, Romeo and Juliet, Black Comedy, and And Then There Were None. James is a teaching artist at Oil Lamp Theater, and works as a marketing manager at Revolution Brewing. He holds an MFA from Indiana University, where he directed main stage productions of Titus Andronicus and Machinal, and a BA from UMKC in his home town of Kansas City.
